In 1991 I lived in the hills in Oakland. Our home was on Broadway Terrace which is a road leading into the hills.
That year there was a HUGE firestorm which was said to have burned 2000F and travelled very fast from house to house. It literally melted homes down to absolutely nothing but flat muck. Even brick was completely melted down to the ground in the intense heat.
Luckily my home was spared as only the homes accross the street were leveled. Regular insurance would not have replaced my computer DATA LOSS in this situation!

How FAST can you get your data back after a crisis?
'Upload Speed' is when data is backed up to off-site servers (to the cloud), 'Download Speed' is when data is restored back into your own network server, client computer or database environment.
A faster 'download' speed is most important. Data only changes by smaller bits at a time with uploads (after a bulk restore has been created initially). Restore downloads should be as fast as possible to recover data quickly.
The most exact method to check for transfer speeds is an Online Speed Checker. Internet bandwidth, Broadband or DSL speed always affects how fast data can be transferred to and from cloud servers. If you want faster backups, increase your ISP account to T1 or higher grade service.

A proven reliable operation can insure all backups with a full restore guarantee.
Full coverage means your company can also legally transfer liability over data loss to the hosted backup company to save on your company insurance premiums. Speak with your insurance agent to confirm it is both feasable and economical for your company.
Error prone hosted backup companies without restore coverage will disclaim data loss in their Terms of Use. They disclaim that users back up at their 'own risk' on an 'AS IS' basis with no guarantee.
Carbonite.com for example recently lost data from 7500 backup accounts. According to Carbonite's TOS there is no restoral guarantee. How could their system go down? Not offering a guarantee for starters is an indication of unreliability. Their system was not redundant or how could this happen? If it had been it was not doing CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Checking).
A common issue with Mozy.com is customers complain "Mozy deleted my files!" or "Mozy stopped backing up my files", "Mozy is too slow" or even "Mozy BSOD!" etc. With such errors in the product is it any wonder these folks are frustrated with such an unreliable non-guaranteed system?
Having a restore guarantee means under one account you should have the ability to:
1. Manage deleted files
2. manage backup procedures (before they just suddenly stop) AND
3. get files restored FAST
Another great feature of delete file management is a business can save what employees have done for years and never lose track of those papers before someone leaves the company!

HIPAA compliance means data is legally secure. Authorized individuals such as YOU ONLY or those from YOUR COMPANY ONLY should be the only ones to manage and view backup data. You hold the key to unlock the data, no other entity should.
Non-HIPAA compliant companies state in their Terms of Service that files may be decrypted and/or inspected. For example www.ADrive.com's #6.Review of Storage Data legitimizes data-mining in exchange for 50GB of FREE storage?
A self-storage facility who tells customers that customer boxes and valuables could be inspected for general shed 'maintenance' or other reasons would lose ALL their customers!
Why mention maintenance unless they are legitimizing every customer's data?
A better cloud backup company should ALSO take security to a whole new level by commissioning outside specialists to attack their data security to 'crack it'. A company unable to be cracked could then offer a full restore guarantee (see #2 above).

Local software provides the packaging before transport.
A good software will not bog down the CPU or cause errors while processing backups.
Strong encryption AND file compression can only be achieved with software installed on the client or server before transferring data into the cloud to the backup hosting servers. An ideal backup company should allow hundreds of installs on clients under one account.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is also a secure data transmission method. Yet it does not compress files first nor does it check for file integrity (error checking). Installed software can do all this AND make the data transfer completely secure using SSL in the process.

Redundant Data should be backed up on several server stations in different cities, states and countries simultaneously. This is essential to be safe from outages, emergencies or crisis. CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) also assures mirrored data has no errors across each location server.

If a computer contains corrupted files,
those files should not be sent to the backup server to replace the previous non-corrupted backup files! This keeps viruses and corrupted files away from the backup copies. This provides TOTAL DISASTER PROTECTION.

There should be no limits on backup size to allow room to backup more data later on.

A valuable part of an online backup system is person to person customer support. If you ever need help during a restore or new installation, there should be someone there to guide the process. Most online backup companies have this.
If you could eliminate the backup cost by promoting to others would you sign up? Most would.
With just a little effort you can create an entire income for yourself far beyond the output costs.

Large amounts of data should be able to be sent to the backup facility to get backups going FAST (sometimes within 24hrs)! Restoring the data can also go fast with a physical backup sent by mail if needed. Simply mail out your USB hard drive physical or media storage.

Retrieving files from a web browser on the road is a great option instead of carrying a laptop around. Managing files remotely is also a great feature. 'Secure' Remote Access is more than just 'Remote' access.

This is where every keystroke is recorded and backed up as it happens. You should also be able to archive incremental backups over many years.

Most hosted cloud backup companies offer this in some form or another, but those who don't may have issues.
You get what you pay for. The security and integrity of your backup is worth the best coverage possible. Why risk anything less?
With automobile Insurance having the best coverage in a time of crisis is a relief. You'll thank yourself later for choosing a good policy.
Google has customer evaluations of cloud hosted backup systems in the market. If you do not find many blogs or comments (especially for newer backup companies), ask the backup company for a 30-day Evaluation Product. This is the best way to get started.
